Application Development: Workshop

Background:

The course addresses the limitations experienced when unable to localise issues/faults in the developments tools or in the interface between development tools leading to inefficient handling of errors in the development process. The workshop is an extension of the courses with a focus on application development such as Programming in PL/I - PL/I Advanced - Programming in COBOL. The course is intended to enhance the value of the specialised courses by integrating the development experiences of programming languages like CICS, DB2, COBOL and PL/I

Participants:

The course will benefit developers of applications in JCL/CICS environments. Also it is recommended for senior IT managers with a specialisation in one of the relevant languages but in general it is recommended that participants have some knowledge of at least two of the relevant programming languages.

Aim:

The course aims to:

  • Create a holistic view of the development environments
  • Focus on the development tools of the participants as the basis for an analysis leading to optimisation of performance and minimisation of development time
  • Explore the reasons for faults/errors in the context of the choice of development tool: PL/1, COBOL, DB2, CICS eller JCL
  • Define the differences between foreground and background execution
  • Describe the potential of communication between multiple CICS based applications
  • Allow evaluation, trial and testing of the relevant development programs/tools in a shared environment.

Contents:

The course is case-based with extensive practical exercises supplemented by relevant theoretical knowledge.

Based on the 'case experience' the following points will be addressed:

  • PL/I and COBOL application development
  • General CICS control
  • Development environment:  Tools and Techniques
  • JCL, procedures, job handling
  • Application structure and development
  • Map definitions, implementation
  • Standards, Structured methods
  • DB2, SQL, Spufi
  • Test facilities
  • Cross-Platform Development

Information of a practical nature:

  • Duration: 3 Days
